1) The railway station The railway station is connected to the national railway system of the 'Deutsche Bahn'. It is combined with a central bus station. The center of the city is in walking distance. (back to map)
2) Globe fountain This fountain, created by the artist Christian Mayer, shows a fascinating physical trick. A huge globe weighing 4,2 tons, consisting of the semi-precious stone amazonit-granite floats and turns on a film of water in the shallow cavity of a base stone. . (back to map)
3) Mia-Münster-House This modern building is the cultural center and contains the city and district library with the municipal archives and a continually growing stock of 60.000 medias. The museum, which is also installed here, is very renowned with its permanent exhibition of the works of art of the local artist and doner of the name of the building, Mia Münster, as well as changing art exhibitions and objects pertaining to the history of the city and its Saint Wendelin. 4) Schloßplatz (castle square) This is the central square in the pedestrian zone in front of the city hall, with a fountain and outdoor pubs, surrounded by plane trees. This square evoques in summertime a mediterranean atmosphere and is, all over the year, the site of many events and markets. (back to map)
City Hall The city hall of St. Wendel is in a restored historical building on the Schlossplatz. The main administration and the office of culture are installed there, while other administrative departments are installed in other buildings. (back to map)
6) Old town hall The old town hall is part of the historical townscape with the citizens' houses on the 'Fruchtmarkt'. The house was built upon decision of the town council in 1791 after a design from the carpenter Johannes Steininger, to replace the old town hall which had been severely damaged during the war of thirty years and during the Dutch war. The building was finished in 1803. In 1858, the stairs on the Fruchtmarkt were built. In the immediate neighbourhood are the 'Schwanenhaus' - house where the composer and director of music in Vienna Philip Jacob Riotte was born - and the 'Marschall-Haus'. (back to map)
7) Basilica Wendelinus The basilica is situated in the center of St. Wendel and is, with its high west tower, a landmark of the city that can be seen from very far. The basilica is said to be one of the most beautiful late gothic churches (14th century) in the western part of Germany and proves the veneration of Saint Wendelin already in the 11th and 12th centuries. Prince Balduin von Trier who bought St. Wendel in 1327, was the initiator. He intended to develop St. Wendel into an economic and cultural center. The choir in the east was first terminated in 1360. Then followed, around 1400, the construction of the west tower and, in the middle of the 15thcentury, the nave. The stone pulpit is worth seeing, as well as the tomb with the remains of Saint Wendelin, which always attracts many groups of pilgrims. (back to map)
8) Citywall The restored rests of the medieval defenses of the city date back to the 14th century. They remind the attack of Franz von Sickingen in 1522 and the Thirty Year War, which both caused a massive destruction of the fortifications. (back to map)
9) Wendel chapel The Wendel chapel, built in 1755, lies on the outskirts of the city with its fountain, at the end of an old pilgrims' path. According to the legend, the Saint has lived and worked on this site during his missionary activities. (back to map)
10) 'Mission' and ethnological museum The building of the 'Mission' - its construction began in 1900 by the Steyler mission - overlooks the city like a castle and has been one of St. Wendel's landmarks for a long time. The ethnological museum of the friars shows objects from all over the world, collected by the mission. (back to map)
11) Ancient part of the city Small, curved alleys, arches, paved paths, places restored in the old style and medieval houses as well as restaurants and pubs with historical surroundings transform the old part of the city into a discovery area, presenting picturesque views at every corner. 12) District administration and police The district administration and the police are in the Mommstrasse near the railway station. (back to map)
13) Public park The public park offers opportunities for a rest with its green surroundings and for families with the childrens' playgrounds. (back to map)
14) Sports Center The sports center at the outskirts of the city is the place of many sportive competitions, such as the world cups of the mountain bikers and the cyclo-cross world championships which have made St. Wendel known over the past years. (back to map)
15) Statue of Wendelinus The modern sculpture of Wendelinus by the artist Dieter Patt was erected in the Holy Year 2000 during the pilgrimage week. From its place on a much frequented roundabout, this new emblem of the city greets all the visitors. (back to map)
16) Conversion area The city and the district install an industrial estate and a recreation park on the former French military area with attractive sports facilities such as a cycle and skater circuit, an ice skating hall, horse back riding facilities and a large golf course. (back to map)
17) Clinic Bosenberg The 'Kurklinik am Bosenberg' is an institution specialized on medical rehabilitation in internal medecine, neurology and neuro-physiology and cures patients from all over Germany. For information, please call 06851-140. (back to map)
18) The valley of the Oster The districts of the city that lie in the valley of the Oster are very rural and provide rest and recreation. Friends of nature and ecologists are invited to visit the restoration of the river to its original condition on a demonstrative path near Osterbrücken. (back to map)
19) Local museum The local museum offers an insight into the rural life of past times. It is open for visitors every first sunday of the month from 2 to 5 pm. Guided tours possible upon request. Please make a date by phone: 06858-8082. (back to map)
20) The church by Stengel at Niederlinxweiler The protestant church at Niederlinxweiler was built in 1755 by Balthasar Wilhelm Stengel in the baroque style which is typical for him. After finishing the church, he left for the Court of St. Petersburg. (back to map)
21) The road of the sculptures The road of the scultures is 25 km long and leads from St. Wendel to the lake 'Bostalsee'. During a walk through this open-air museum of modern art, the works of art of international artists can be admired in a beautiful landscape. (back to map)
22) The church at Bliesen The catholic church at Bliesen war built in the neo-romanic style in 1903/1904, similar to the church of "Maria Laach". The church contains remarkable wooden sculptures dating back to the 18th century. The tower, dating back to the 12th century, still remains from the medieval church. (back to map)
23)' Magdalenen' chapel The Magdalenen chapel is in the vicinity of the basilica in one of the oldest buildings of the city, the 'brown house', which has a turbulent past. Nobody would nowadays believe that a medieval chapel hides behind the baroque front side of the house in the Balduinstrasse. But the back of the building shows with the rests of a gothic arch and two buttresses that a religious building existed here in the 14th century. (back to map)
