HistoryThe first public library in St. Wendel, with a stock of 1.150 books, was opened on Sept. 10, 1936 in the Old City Hall. A continually growing stock of books necessitated several moves, 1950 into the Magdalenen chapel, 1958 into the district vocational school (here, for the first time, with self-service) and 1969 into the just renovated house Schmoll. The library has its name 'Stadt- und Kreisbibliothek' (municipal and district library, as the municipality and the district administration are the responsible institutions) since 1965.The library regulations stipulate that all citizens of the city and the district may use the services of the library. In 1988, 60.710 books were borrowed from a stock of 23.513 books. With this important stock and the increased use, the library reached its limits in the house Schmoll and another solution had to be found.
Summary Index: A - General Offer The library as a media center In addition to the usual print media, the media stock consists of audio-visual and electronic media. A total of 50.000 books (e.g. novels and non-fiction books, encyclopedias and other consulting books, 140 newspapers and magazines, 10.000 compact discs and music cassettes (classics, rock/pop/jazz, audiobooks and radio plays for children), 300 CD-ROMs, 1.000 DVDs (feature films, special topics, music films, childrens' films and operas), 120 games and many information brochures is available. MedienKompetenzZentrum - Internet The center consists of five PC-work places and one printer. All the PCs are equipped with the programs of the MS-Office package (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access) and have a DSL-internet connection. Use of the internet is free of charge for the visitors of the library. - possibility to make copies Conditions for schools and kindergartens School classes and kindergartens are entitled to a guided tour of the library and a presentation of the stocks, in order to make them available for school and recreation purposes. In addition, schools can borrow crates with books of a certain topic for a prolonged period, to be used as instruction material. Other events organized by the library should also increase the reading competence of the beginners and the students. CatalogueHere, you can reach the Web-OPAC The Web-OPAC is instituted by the State library in Saarbrücken. It gives you the possibility to search in the stocks of various libraries in the Saarland, or to chose a specific library, for instance the library in St. Wendel. Click under "Zweigstelle" on the required library. In the library, you will find of course an OPAC at your disposal. You can search through our stocks there, or look at the state of your 'account'.
