Missionshaus St. Wendel, The Mission House has been founded by the Steyler missionaries in 1898. The impressive building looks over the city like a castle. The Mission House consists of the church, the ethnical museum with the pilgrims' room, the book store of the Mission, the Arnold-Janssen high school and a home for the old missionaries. The museum shows a large range of objects from areas of activity of the missionaries in several continents. Opening hours: Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 12 noon and 2 pm - 6 pm Guided visits upon request Open Air Gallery in St. WendelThe artists Klaus Riefer and Christof Thome are currently creating a particular attraction with the open-air gallery, which is immediately apparent to all visitors and guests of the city. The artists paint on particularly exposed house fronts the pictures of well-known painters like Dürer, da Vinci, Monet, van Gogh or Dali. Mayor Klaus Bouillon promotes this project, for which he has taken over the patronage. Four of the paintings are already finished: The Mona Lisa smiles from a house front in the Wingertstrasse, the self-portrait of Albrecht Dürer can be admired in the Mommstrasse. The 'Green Man' by Rudolf Hausner is decorating a front in the Kelsweilerstrasse and the "Four Apostles" watch over the Wendelinusstrasse. The fifth picture is just being terminated. It has been ordered by the municipality and is painted on the Dom-Hotel in the Carl-Cetto-Strasse. "The steadiness of reminiscence", a surrealistic picture by Salvador Dali reminds us of the passing of time. Further large pictures should soon complete the open-air -gallery, in order to achieve an all-over presence in the downtown area. The art works are being sponsored and the names and logos of the sponsors appear on the pictures. The artists are therefore still looking for interested art sponsors and as well for house fronts suited for the purpose. Any person who has to offer a house front for a Picasso or van Gogh or who wishes to become a sponsor, may therefore please contact Christof Thome, phone 06853-30944 or Klaus Riefer, phone 0172 - 8301562.
