Former military area transformed into 'Wendelinuspark' The departure of the French troops in summer 1999 meant for the city of St. Wendel the loss of economic and social relations, but on the other hand offered a new chance for the whole area. The municipality and the district have taken up this chance together with the Wendelinuspark GmbH, who is working out a positive development of the nearly 600 acres, based on an urbanization concept. A basic concept was worked out under the direction of the Mayor Klaus Bouillon already before the departure of the troops, which foresees a functional synthesis of working, living, recreation and tourism for both areas of the Tritschler and the Welvert barracks. This early activity has already proved to be successful. The development of the new infrastructure is well under way with the support of the government of the Saarland and several companies are already installed. Size: approx. 580 acres in total with the buildings in the area of the former barracks and the open areas. Fun, sports and wellness: Fun, sports and wellness are the key words for the use of the former Welvert barracks. A sports and recreation center is being installed here, which is unique in the whole region. The concentration on the topics sports, recovery and recreation is intended to confirm the image which has already been introduced successfully by the municipality and the district. The trend sports center has no adequate competition in the vicinity and will therefore thoroughly improve the competitiveness of the St. Wendel region as a touristic and recreational area. Sports circuit : The construction of a course for bicycles, walkers and inline skaters ("sports track") started in january 2001. The course is 5,2 km long, 4 m large, illuminated and connected to the local road net. The public thus has access to the former military area for the first time since 60 years. The sports track is a key project for the realization of the concept of recreation activities, sports and tourism and fits very well into the general touristic program of the district. It also improves the frequentation of the sports park and is, at the same time, the site of regional and international sports events. In the area of the former tank wash, the sports track was supplemented by a 300 m speed-skating track. Small information pavilions, fixed kilometer indications, a drinking water station etc. complete this project.
Golf course :
The grenades rushing through the air in the past will be replaced in future by small white balls, because the hilly landscape is ideal for its transformation into a natural golf course that will fit marvellously and harmoniously into the countryside. The golf course will have an 18-hole area fit for championships, with driving range and special training installations, as well as a 9-hole course for public use.
Trade park : The necessary development works have already been terminated for some time in the area of the Tritschler barracks, which supplies the handicrafts, trade and service park with the most modern infrastructure. Within less than a year, approx. 6 million Euro were invested in modern supply conducts for water, gas, sewage, electricity. The road connection of the industrial area west through the roundabout 'Fachmarktzentrum' as well as to the Burbacher Strasse has also been terminated. In consequence, there are additional 20.000 square meters of industrial estate available for investors, a large part of which however has already been sold. The absolute top of the infrastructure are the latest telecommunication facilities, using a modern fiberglass net, which offer the best conditions for the installation of technological enterprises.
