St. Wendel - a city of events! The picturesque old part of the city with its historical buildings still gives a good idea of the turbulent history throughout the Middle Ages up to modern times. The city is widely known through its patron Saint Wendalinus, who is worshipped in many parts of the world. His remains rest in the basilica. Huge open-air-concerts, presentations of well-known artists and international events, like the world-cup of the mountainbikers, constitute a considerable increase of the citys' image and promote tourism. In particular in the cycle sports, St. Wendel has become famous all over Germany and on an international level, due to the multitude of events on this topic. The city of St. Wendel as the center of the district is located in the pleasant, varied landscape of the natural park Saar-Hunsrück. Many recreation possibilities in connection with sports and wellness are available at the lake Bostalsee with a surface of 120 hectares, in the St. Wendel countryside. Charming villages situated between large forests and fields invite to stay for a break. Old traditions which have been brought back to life to be seen and perhaps to participate in, for instance at the Johann-Adams-Mühle (mill) in Theley or in the farmers'museum in Reitscheid.
